Other notable titles on display in the depths of the GWCC were Final Fantasy VII, PaRappa the Rapper, Crash Bandicoot 2, Tomb Raider II, Daikatana, and Starcraft. As for the games, the highlights of the show included the debuts of Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, GoldenEye 007, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Half-Life.
The only hardware talk was on the PC front, where Intel had just announced the Pentium II, and 3dfx was presenting a new line of video cards. So with all the hardware out of the way, the focus was on the software. The Sega Saturn was struggling to its second anniversary, PlayStation was over a year old, and the Nintendo 64 had just released the previous holiday season. The Georgia Dome and The GWCC would be the home for E3 in 19.Į3 1997 was all about the games. Right next door to the Georgia Dome is the Georgia World Congress Center, a massive, multi-level convention center that housed the larger publishers' booths. The Dome was used for hundreds of booths for smaller companies, similar to that of Kentia Hall in L.A. Atlanta was somewhat of a popular city at the time, having just played host to the Olympics in 1996 and sporting a brand new football stadium, the Georgia Dome, which was a venue used by the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four, and other special events. Fans have wondered if Resident Evil Village, which uses a first-person perspective like RE7, could get its own VR mode. After two years in Los Angeles, E3 came to Atlanta in 1997. Even though PlayStation VR2 doesn't have a release date yet, it's easy to imagine RE7 receiving enhancements for it. This week's announcement didn't mention virtual reality, which Resident Evil 7 used to critical acclaim on PlayStation 4. However, players will likely have to run the games in performance mode without ray tracing to achieve that. Devil May Cry shows that framerates above 60 on high refresh rate displays aren't out of the question. AdX95SnmyXīenchmarks of these games on the last-generation consoles indicate there's a good chance they'll reach 4K at 60 frames per second on the newer machines, or very close to it. It looks like they have added in ray traced reflections into these updates of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7. I recognise that grain pattern from leagues away (on an off-screen reflection angle as well too). It's probably safe to expect all of those enhancements are coming to the upgraded Resident Evil games. Eurogamer's Alex Battaglia spotted ray-traded reflections in a Resident Evil 3 screenshot immediately after Capcom's announcement. Village employs ray-traced shadows, lighting, and ambient occlusion.
Those who already own the games will get the updates for free on all platforms.Ĭapcom has two games on the current-generation consoles that use the same graphics engine as the upcoming Resident Evil titles-Devil May Cry V and Resident Evil Village. A PC makeover is also coming later this year. The PS5 version will receive haptic feedback for its DualSense controller. The new versions will introduce ray tracing, higher frame rates, and 3D audio.
Resident Evil 7, along with the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, will get upgrades for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. The publisher offered only basic details and no firm date for the upgrades but examining a couple of other Capcom games may help predict how they'll look.
Something to look forward to: This week, Capcom announced it's working on upgrading three recent Resident Evil games for the current-generation consoles.
